Know you Role - Identify your Goal

Welcome to Hard Iron and Soul. The place to find info and advice on the world of health and fitness.
First things first, who am I and what experience do I have in the world of health and fitness.
Academically none, which is why I'm here. The world of health and fitness is for anyone. You don't need to be a biologist, doctor or nutritionist to know about health and fitness. Anyone can do it. Any mind set, any background, anybody!
I'm here to make health and fitness a little more interesting, keeping the clear cut basics consistent, but with a bit of 'human' thrown in, so I wont throw in fancy words and not define them.

As a consistent gym member, I'm always looking to learn new things, as you should do when entering the world of fitness.
I have been training regularly for the past two years. I'm no Mr Olympia, but I love what I do. Training and the gym has a key factor in my life. My life is planned around my meal times, preparation, sleeping and training times (and i happen to throw in a Mathematics degree in there somewhere). But there is a reason to why I do all this. There is a motive at the end of the road. That is to be in the best athletic form i can possibly be in, through performance and aesthetics.
For those who are starting the road of health and fitness or are beginning to look into but not too sure about how to get started, this is why I am here.

The title speaks for itself, identify your goal. Know what you want and how you want it. Take this with a pinch of salt however. There is a fine line between a want and a need. For example, I want to fit the athleticism of an NFL offensive player, whether it be a wide receiver or running back. With that, I need to improve my strength and physique to reach that standard. Those who are not familiar with the NFL, the wide receivers and running backs do a lot of carrying the ball.
speed is an important aspect primarily. But I'm not going to reach that speed if I carry around a lot of body fat. Hence, I need to lose that body fat. How I do that will be explained further through other posts.
That's the key idea. Identify what you want every time you put on that sweat band, that gym glove, those fresh comfortable sneakers you purchased. From that, look at your lifestyle and see what you need to do, to get there.
Common mistake: most people don't know what they want when they come to the gym. They want to do whats exciting rather than functional. This is great to do from the start, and its a good way to start familiarizing yourself with the 'ethos' of the gym. But its not for life. If you want your lifestyle to change and become a new person, a goal is the essential first step to getting there.

A common setback from identifying your goal, is looking at what you need to change. At the start, these things are usually quite negative, which can make you feel like your not good enough or its too much work.
Keep this in mind, the first step doing something about it, is accepting it. Its harsh, but there is no two way about it.
The more you try to hide it, it will never make itself better. The only way to get rid of it, is to fight it. The more you fight, the less it will make itself better, sometimes more than what you expect.

From the title, to know your role in the gym, you need to find that goal. Your goal works in a pyramid. At the top is your all time goal, and then it breaks down into smaller chunks. Its how you choose to manage the size of those chunks. Smaller are easier to digest. The smaller and realistic they are, the easier it will become. The more you fight, the more results you will see.
